Grinder type
hopper grinders (on-demand grinders)

The beans sit in the hopper and are ground on demand. This is the faster way in everyday life, especially if the same coffee is used all the time. A full hopper, however, means that the beans at the bottom are exposed to the air for longer.

Grinder
65 mm

The diameter of the grinding burrs determines how many revolutions are needed for the same amount of coffee. Larger burrs need fewer revolutions, the grind warms up less, and heat in the grind reduces aroma.

Burrs
65 mm, special steel

Flat burrs grind with two parallel rings and deliver a tight particle size distribution. You do not recognize dull burrs by appearance but by the fact that the shot runs faster than usual.

Grind size adjustment
stepless, one handed, with locking mechanism

Stepless means you can adjust continuously, even between two clicks. That is useful when a bean falls exactly between two settings, but it requires that you remember your setting.

Dosing
timed dosing

The grinder grinds for a set time. That is quick for everyday use, but you have to readjust it when the bean changes or when the grind size changes, because then a different amount will flow in the same time.

Control
No app control
Grinding capacity
4.0 g/s

The grinder output indicates how much ground coffee comes out per second. For a single drink you hardly notice it, as extraction and milk determine the time. You only feel it when many drinks are made back to back.

Bean hopper
1200 g

A large hopper means less frequent refilling. Bear in mind that beans age in it: anything that stays in the hopper for longer than a few days loses aroma, no matter how good the grinder is.

Burr lifespan
800 kg

The manufacturer's guideline for how much coffee the burrs can handle before they should be replaced. You do not notice dull burrs by their appearance but because the extraction runs faster than usual at the same setting.

Who the Mahlkönig E65S is made for

Grind size decides before the machine even starts.

The beans sit in the hopper, ground on demand. This is the faster way when the same variety is always running.

  1. 01 Counter with throughput65 mm discs, hopper for 1.2 kg. Shot after shot without pause, even if the queue reaches the door.
  2. 02 Dose at the touch of a buttonOnce the timer is set, every shot runs the same. No weighing while orders come in.
  3. 03 For those looking for the exact pointStepless adjustment. You do not get stuck between two notches but hit the value in between.
  4. 04 Barista setup at homeThis grinder is otherwise found behind café counters. If you want the same consistency at home as in your favorite café, bring it into your kitchen.

What matters for the grinder

What this grinder can do and where its limit lies.

The numbers from the data sheet, in the order that matters. A faster grinder does not grind better, it only grinds more.

65 mm

Large burrs, cooler grounds

The larger the burrs, the fewer revolutions are needed for the same amount of coffee. The grounds heat up less, and heat in the ground coffee costs aroma. Installed are special steel.

800 kg

How long the burrs last

Manufacturer specification for when the burrs should be replaced. Dull burrs are not noticeable by the grind appearance, but only by taste.

4,5 s

How long a dose takes

For 18 g of coffee, calculated from 4 g per second. For a single drink you hardly notice it: brewing and milk foam take longer than grinding. For 50 drinks during peak time that is about 3 minutes less grinding time than the mid-range of our assortment.

20 × 29 cm

This is how much space it needs

These are 580 square centimeters of counter that are permanently occupied. At 62 cm height you need space above it for refilling.

30 kg per day

It cannot do more than that.

That would be about 1660 espressos per day at 18 g per shot. The maximum performance quoted by the manufacturer, not a recommendation for everyday use. If you regularly operate in this range, schedule maintenance more frequently.

All values come from the data sheet of this device. If a specification is missing, it is not listed here.

Is the Mahlkönig E65S, a professional espresso grinder for café quality, suitable for filter coffee?

The Mahlkönig E65S was developed for espresso preparation and is optimized for that purpose. The source does not provide information regarding its suitability for filter coffee.

Does the E65S handle our breakfast rush with 80–100 shots in 2 hours?

The E65S reliably handles a demand of 80 to 100 servings in 2 hours. It operates with 65 mm grinding discs made of special steel and delivers consistent quality. Mahlkönig recommends a daily output of 50 to 300 beverages, which clearly includes your requirement. Thanks to Silent technology, the operation is pleasantly quiet. The stepless grind adjustment ensures that the extraction quality remains stable even under high load.

How often do I need to change the grinding discs on the E65S and what is the cost in downtime?

The grinding discs of the E65S should be replaced approximately every 400 to 500 kg, depending on the coffee bean and setting. A replacement by a technician typically takes about 20 to 30 minutes. For consistently good grinding quality, we also recommend regular cleaning of the grinder.

What does the E65S GbW with scale offer me specifically compared to the standard E65S?

The E65S GbW features an integrated scale and doses directly by weight. This way, you always get exactly the desired amount of coffee grounds, for example, 18.5 g, without needing to re-weigh. This saves time and reduces coffee waste. The standard E65S operates with time-based dosing, which requires regular adjustments. For consistent quality and cost-effectiveness, the GbW variant is especially advantageous for high demands.

Does the E65S fit our espresso machine with 2 groups, or do we need the E80 directly?

For a coffee machine with two groups, the E65S is suitable if you prepare up to about 100 servings of espresso per day. If your demand regularly exceeds this, we recommend the E80 due to its higher grinding performance.
