The best espresso machine 2026: which one suits you?
There is no single best espresso machine. There is the best one for your budget, for what ends up in your cup, and for the space in your kitchen. This overview helps you narrow down the right class with four questions and then leads you to our three buying guides: under 1.500 €, from 1.500 to 3.000 € and from 3.000 to 7.500 €.
In short: which class for whom
- Entry level under 1.500 €: for anyone coming from a super-automatic or a French press who wants a reliably good espresso and cappuccino. Examples: Stone Espresso Plus, Quickmill 3035 Pegaso PID, Bezzera Luce. See the buying guide under 1.500 €.
- The machine for many years, 1.500 to 3.000 €: for home baristas who want dual boilers, PID or flow control. Examples: Rocket R58 Tune, Bezzera Duo MN, Rocket Mozzafiato Cronometro R PID. See the buying guide 1.500 to 3.000 €.
- High end, 3.000 to 7.500 €: for tinkerers who want pressure profiling and for anyone looking for craftsmanship and design. Examples: Sanremo YOU, Rocket R Nine One, Dalla Corte Studio One. See the buying guide 3.000 to 7.500 €.
Four questions that decide the choice
1. Straight espresso or mainly milk?
If you mainly drink espresso, you need a stable brew temperature, so PID. If you make many cappuccini in a row, you need steam without long waits. Single-boiler machines, heat-exchanger machines and dual boilers are built for these different needs.
2. How many shots per day?
Two espressos in the morning are handled by every machine in this overview. For family, guests or an office, boiler size, heat-up time and a timer that ensures the machine is ready when you get up matter.
3. How much space, and is there a plumbed water connection?
Compact machines fit under any wall cabinet. Larger machines often offer a plumbed water connection so you no longer have to fill a tank. Measure the height under your cabinet before buying, including the cup tray.
4. Do you want to experiment?
Pressure profiles and flow control are especially worthwhile with light, fruity roasts and if you like to understand what happens in the portafilter. If you simply want a reliably good espresso, you are often happier with a very stable machine without profiles.
Single-boiler, heat-exchanger, dual boiler, multi-boiler
- Single-boiler: one boiler for brewing and steam. Inexpensive, but you wait between espresso and milk foam.
- Heat-exchanger (HX): a steam boiler through which a heat exchanger carries the brew water. Brew and steam at the same time, the classic choice for cappuccino.
- Dual boiler: one boiler each for brewing and steam, both adjustable separately. The most precise brew temperature for espresso.
- Multi-boiler: additionally a dedicated boiler at the group head, for example on Dalla Corte machines. Very stable, even with many shots.
Don’t forget the grinder
A good machine helps little if the grinder can’t keep up. Plan it from the start, see our guides coffee grinders up to 500 € and espresso grinders from 500 to 2.000 €.

Frequently asked questions
Which is the best espresso machine?
The one that matches your drinking habits, your budget and your space. For beginners who drink milk-based drinks, a heat-exchanger machine with PID; for straight espresso, a dual boiler; for tinkerers, a machine with pressure profiling.
Does espresso from an expensive machine taste better?
Not automatically. More expensive machines regulate temperature more precisely and give you more control. The biggest differences still come from fresh beans, the grinder and the person operating the machine.
What is the difference between a heat-exchanger and a dual boiler?
The heat-exchanger heats the brew water via the steam boiler, while the dual boiler has a dedicated boiler for each. The dual boiler controls brew temperature more precisely; the heat-exchanger is often cheaper and just as quick for milk drinks.
