What makes this coffee special

Clean, floral, well-defined

Floral on the first sip, followed by bright fruit with notes of red berries and cherry, finishing clean and sweet. A washed Ethiopian that lets the flavors stand individually instead of melding them into a compote.

The Daye Bensa farm is located at 1,900 to 2,217 meters, the affiliated outgrower families cultivate plots between 2,000 and 2,400 meters. The higher the altitude, the more slowly the cherry ripens and the more time it has to build sweetness and complexity.

Aromas are natural flavor associations from green coffee and roasting. Nothing is added to the coffee.

A good fit if you …

  • you like clean, floral coffees with individually discernible flavors
  • you drink pour-over and like to work with recipes
  • you are looking for a modern, bright espresso
  • you want a cappuccino that tastes of bright fruit rather than chocolate
  • you want to know which village your coffee comes from

Probably not if you …

  • you are used to a strong, dark, chocolatey espresso. Then choose Hornisgrinde or Ätna
  • you want the full fruit power of a Natural. Then choose Hochlandjuwel
  • you generally avoid acidity

Ethiopia

Daye Bensa (founders: brothers Asefa & Mulugeta Dukamo) + outgrower community from the villages Shantawene, Karamo & Bombe

Hochlandblüte comes from Daye Bensa Coffee in the village of Shantawene, Bensa district, Sidamo. The brothers Asefa and Mulugeta Dukamo founded the company in 2006. Mulugeta's task from the beginning was the construction and expansion of the washing stations, in other words exactly the processing step to which this coffee owes its clarity.

In addition to its own farm, Daye Bensa works with outgrower families from the villages of Shantawene, Karamo and Bombe, who deliver their cherries to the washing stations. In Shantawene the majority of people work in coffee cultivation, including many women. Each year the highest quality farmers from each village are awarded certificates and cash prizes, an incentive that ends up directly in the cup.

A Shantawene lot from this farm placed 7th at the Cup of Excellence in Ethiopia in 2020 among more than 1,400 coffees entered.

The award applies to a competition lot from the year 2020, not to our batch. It shows the level at which work is done there.

Italian style of coffee with little flavour of fruits

Italian style of coffee with little flavour of fruits. Personally, I like more acid/ fruity taste of espresso. For the same price, it is possible to by much better coffees such as La Boheme or Kmen.

Questions & answers

What customers ask about Hochlandblüte

Ask your own question →
What does washed processing mean?

In washed processing the pulp is removed shortly after harvest, the remaining mucilage is fermented in tanks, then the bean is washed and dried. Because the fruit is removed early, you taste the coffee itself: variety, soil, altitude. The flavors stand individually, not as a compote. This is exactly how Hochlandblüte differs from our Ethiopian Natural Hochlandjuwel. More on this in our article Acidity in Coffee.

Why is this coffee expensive to buy?

Hand picking on steep slopes, separate lot handling instead of mixing, washed processing with controlled fermentation and drying on beds: each of these steps costs labor time that does not occur with anonymous commodity coffee. The difference in the cup is in clarity, not power, and it shows most clearly in the pour-over.

How fresh is the coffee when it arrives?

We roast in Vöhringen and only fill your bag immediately before shipping. Until then the roast batch is stored sealed in bulk packaging. The roast date is printed on every package. After 10 to 14 days of resting the sweetness and body are just right, after that the coffee remains aromatic for about four months.

Whole bean or ground?

Both. In addition to whole bean we grind on request for portafilter (fine), drip coffee maker, moka pot or French Press (coarse). Freshly ground tastes best, ground coffee loses aroma faster.

What package sizes are available?

250 g and 500 g, most varieties also as 1 kg. The larger the package, the cheaper the price per kilo. We display the price per kilo directly at the size selection.

Is the coffee really organic?

Yes. All our coffees are EU organic certified, Naturgold and Naturharmonie are additionally Demeter certified. The responsible organic control body is shown on each product page in the bean profile, together with the note non-EU agriculture.

Can I get the coffee on a subscription?

Yes. With a subscription you save 10 % compared to a single order. You set delivery frequency and quantity directly at purchase.
