What sets the Bezzera Air Top MN PID apart from its siblings?

The same product line, different configurations. The rows come from the same data sheet that appears further below.

Faema E61

The E61 was introduced in 1961 and has remained the reference point since. A thermosiphon keeps it at temperature continuously, instead of you having to search for it before each shot. You can get seals, shower screens and portafilters for it from specialty dealers, not just the manufacturer.

Temperature control
yes

A PID control continuously measures the temperature and regulates the heater accordingly, instead of simply switching it on and off at a threshold. The difference does not show in the first espresso of the day but in the third in a row: the machine hits the same point again.

Preinfusion
mechanical

Before full pressure the coffee grounds are pre-wetted with low pressure. This is done mechanically through the design of the brew group, without electronics and without adjustments. It prevents channeling in the puck, that is spots where the water breaks through too quickly.

Flow control
no

With Flow Control you manually control how quickly the water runs through the coffee grounds: start slowly, then increase pressure. That takes the edge off acidic beans and gives you an extra adjustment. Without Flow Control the extraction runs at a fixed pressure, and that is enough for most recipes.

Boiler volume
1.5 l
Boiler material
brass

Brass combines good thermal conductivity with robustness and has been common in espresso machines for decades. As with copper, water hardness determines how often you need to descale.

Water connection
water tank, plumbed water connection

The machine can be permanently connected to the water line but does not have to be. When plumbed in you do not need to refill, but the location is fixed and an installer is required. A water filter in the line is then mandatory, not optional.

Steam power
strong
Extraction
manual
Pump type
rotary pump

A rotary pump runs significantly quieter and more evenly than a vibration pump and holds the pressure more steady over the entire extraction. It is also the prerequisite for a machine to be connected to the water line.

Cup warmer
yes

The top surface of the machine is warmed by residual heat. A prewarmed cup draws less heat from the espresso, and those last degrees decide whether it still tastes the same in the glass as in the cup.

Standby
no

The machine switches itself off after a set time or goes into a low-power state. That saves electricity when you turn it on in the morning and then forget about it during the day. Without standby it stays on until you switch it off.

Portafilter diameter
58 mm

58 millimeters is the most common size. Baskets, tampers, levelers and distributors are available for it from many manufacturers, so you are not tied to an unusual size or a single supplier.

Who the Bezzera Air Top MN PID is made for

Full control on the footprint of a toaster.

You do not have to choose between compact and controllable here. On 26 cm there is an E61 machine with PID that can also be connected to the water line.

  1. 01 Small kitchens, big demands26 cm wide and still PID-controlled. Space does not decide the technology.
  2. 02 For those seeking temperature controlPID plus mechanical pre-infusion. Lighter coffee needs different settings than darker, and here you set them.
  3. 03 Plumbed water possibleTop tank with 2.5 liters or direct connection to the line. Both supported.

Sehr gut !
