Grinder type
hopper grinders (on-demand grinders)

The beans sit in the hopper and are ground on demand. This is the faster way in everyday life, especially if the same coffee is used all the time. A full hopper, however, means that the beans at the bottom are exposed to the air for longer.

Grinder
80 mm

The diameter of the grinding burrs determines how many revolutions are needed for the same amount of coffee. Larger burrs need fewer revolutions, the grind warms up less, and heat in the grind reduces aroma.

Burrs
80 mm, cast steel

Flat burrs grind with two parallel rings and deliver a tight particle size distribution. You do not recognize dull burrs by appearance but by the fact that the shot runs faster than usual.

Grind size adjustment
Electric motor-driven

The adjustment is done by a motor instead of a manual ring. Settings can therefore be reproduced exactly, which saves you time in daily operations when switching varieties.

Dosing
dose control by scale

The grinder weighs itself and grinds until the set amount is in the portafilter. That stays the same even when the bean changes or the bag gets emptier, where a time-based control would need readjusting.

Control
With app control
Grinding capacity
6.0 g/s

The grinder output indicates how much ground coffee comes out per second. For a single drink you hardly notice it, as extraction and milk determine the time. You only feel it when many drinks are made back to back.

Bean hopper
1800 g

A large hopper means less frequent refilling. Bear in mind that beans age in it: anything that stays in the hopper for longer than a few days loses aroma, no matter how good the grinder is.

Burr lifespan
2500 kg

The manufacturer's guideline for how much coffee the burrs can handle before they should be replaced. You do not notice dull burrs by their appearance but because the extraction runs faster than usual at the same setting.

Large burrs, cooler grounds

The larger the burrs, the fewer revolutions are needed for the same amount of coffee. The grounds heat up less, and heat in the ground coffee costs aroma. Installed are cast steel.

2500 kg

How long the burrs last

Manufacturer specification for when the burrs should be replaced. Dull burrs are not noticeable by the grind appearance, but only by taste. At 90 kg per day, that is about 28 operating days.

3 s

How long a dose takes

For 18 g of coffee, calculated from 6 g per second. For a single drink you hardly notice it: brewing and milk foam take longer than grinding. For 50 drinks during peak time that is about 4 minutes less grinding time than the mid-range of our assortment.

24 × 34 cm

This is how much space it needs

These are 816 square centimeters of counter that are permanently occupied. At 63 cm height you need space above it for refilling.

90 kg per day

Recommended up to this point

That's about 5000 espressos per day, calculated with 18 g per shot. The daily throughput recommended by the manufacturer. If you regularly exceed it, you need the next size up, otherwise the grinder and ultimately the coffee will suffer.

All values come from the data sheet of this device. If a specification is missing, it is not listed here.

Is the Mahlkönig E80W GbS, the future of connected espresso grinding, suitable for filter coffee?

The Mahlkönig E80W GbS is a specialized espresso grinder developed for busy coffee shops and focused on espresso preparation. Its specific technologies, such as the Grind-by-Sync function, make it particularly well suited for consistency in espresso, but that does not automatically qualify it for filter coffee preparation. For use with filter coffee, depending on the requirements, it may be more sensible to consider other machines that are specifically designed for that purpose.

Does the E80W GbS actually reduce retention, or do coffee grounds remain trapped as with other grinders?

The E80W GbS is primarily optimized for dosing precision and speed, not for ultra-low retention like Single Dose grinders. Mahlkönig does not publish specific retention figures for the E80W. Practically: with on-demand grinders that have a hopper (like the E80W) typically 0.3 to 0.7 g of coffee grounds remain in the grinding chamber, for 18 g shots that is about 2 to 4% of the dose. For high-volume cafés with constant throughput this is uncritical, because fresh grounds quickly displace the old. When changing beans (e.g., Single Origin → Blend) you need to purge. If you need retention below 0.1 g, you will likely end up with home-barista grinders with a Single Dose design.

Which Mahlkönig coffee grinder is best suited for espresso?

For espresso, models with 64 mm or 65 mm burrs are ideal. The E65W GbS is currently Mahlkönig's main café grinder and manages 80 to 120 shots per day with consistent quality. For home use the X64 SD is perfect: it grinds single portions fresh, has a 64 mm hardened-steel disc burr set and you can adjust the grind size steplessly from 120 to 1,500 µm. The grind is distributed very evenly, so the espresso tastes clearer and less bitter.

Which Mahlkönig grinder is suitable for Single Dose grinding (single-dosing)?

The X64 SD is specifically built for Single Dose. You only fill in the beans you need, it grinds everything through and almost nothing remains in the grinder. This is perfect if you want to try different coffees without residues mixing. The E64 WS can also weigh single portions with Grind-by-Weight. Classic café grinders like the E65W have a bean hopper and are designed for continuous operation.

Which Mahlkönig coffee grinder is suitable for home use?

The X64 SD is ideal for home. It is compact, grinds fresh per cup and operates quietly under 65 dB. The E64 WS is the bridge between home use and a small café: more precise with Grind-by-Weight but more expensive. Both have 64 mm burrs which are more than sufficient for espresso. Important: Mahlkönig grinders are an investment. If you previously owned an inexpensive entry-level grinder you will notice the difference in flavor immediately.

Which Mahlkönig grinder is suitable for both espresso and filter coffee?

The EK43 is legendary for both brew methods. It has 98 mm burrs and delivers very even grounds from espresso to filter coffee. That's why it was used for years in barista competitions. For pure espresso in cafés there are now faster alternatives like the E65. The X64 SD at home covers both areas with its stepless setting from 120 to 1,500 µm. For filter coffee you simply set it coarser.

What does the burr size (e.g., 65 mm, 80 mm) mean for Mahlkönig grinders?

The number indicates the diameter of the burrs in millimetres. Larger burrs grind faster and generate less heat because the work is distributed over a larger area. 64-65 mm are standard for home espresso and in smaller cafés. 80 mm and above are intended for high throughput in larger operations. The X64 SD has 64 mm burrs made of hardened special steel. That is more than sufficient for a precise espresso grind.

What warranty and service does Mahlkönig offer?

Mahlkönig has a strong service and spare-parts network in Germany. The grinders are produced here and the burrs come from in-house development. As a result, spare parts are readily available and the grinders are designed for long service life. The exact warranty terms depend on the dealer you buy from. Important: Mahlkönig has been on the market since 1924; the brand stands for reliability in continuous operation. This is reflected in the service.

How much does a Mahlkönig coffee grinder cost in the mid-price segment?

Mahlkönig grinders are priced higher than entry-level brands. The X64 SD for home use is an investment justified by quality and durability. Professional models like the E65W GbS cost significantly more but are designed for café operation. The higher price comes from in-house burr production in Germany, very consistent particle distribution and long durability. For exact prices it is best to check directly with a specialist dealer.

How do I set the grind size correctly on Mahlkönig grinders?

The X64 SD has a stepless grind-size adjustment from 120 to 1,500 µm. You turn the adjustment ring and feel your way to the right grind size. For espresso start finer (towards 120-200 µm), for filter coffee coarser. If the espresso runs through too fast, set finer. If it runs too slow or tastes bitter, set coarser. This is called dial-in. At the beginning it takes a few attempts until you have found the right setting for your beans and machine.
